Sunday, October 30, 2005NaNo time again
Just so everyone knows, I don't plan to be on AIM very much (if at all) for the month of November. It saps my precious noveling momentum. Blog posts likely to decrease as well. I will try to get my NaNoMeter back from last year, and use it as a ghetto substitute for actual updates. Although there will probably be novel-related squeeing or crying, I'm not gonna lie. Eaten by Sharks The worst thing about eaten-by-sharks is this: my last thought would be "I wish I had watched more Discovery Channel so I'd know what to do." ![]() Wednesday, October 26, 2005Idiom check
When you say, "...and everything was downhill from there" do you mean: a) Everything was easy from that point on. b) Everything continued to deteriorate from there. c) Either, depending on context. d) What? I would never say such a thing! Et tu?
Results for yet another OKCupid quiz. Text-only because I'm holding out from actually joining the site. Don't question my strategic genius! -------------------------------- The Which Historic General Are You? Test Result: Julius Caesar You scored 51 Wisdom, 84 Tactics, 39 Guts, and 57 Ruthlessness! Roman military and political leader. He was instrumental in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. His conquest of Gallia Comata extended the Roman world all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, introducing Roman influence into what has become modern France, an accomplishment of which direct consequences are visible to this day. In 55 BC Caesar launched the first Roman invasion of Britain. Caesar fought and won a civil war which left him undisputed master of the Roman world, and began extensive reforms of Roman society and government. He was proclaimed dictator for life, and heavily centralized the already faltering government of the weak Republic. Caesar's friend Marcus Brutus conspired with others to assassinate Caesar in hopes of saving the Republic. The dramatic assassination on the Ides of March was the catalyst for a second set of civil wars, which marked the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire under Caesar's grand-nephew and adopted son Octavian, later known as Caesar Augustus. Caesar's military campaigns are known in detail from his own written Commentaries (Commentarii), and many details of his life are recorded by later historians such as Suetonius, Plutarch, and Cassius Dio. How you compared to other people your age and gender: You scored higher than 12% on Unorthodox You scored higher than 93% on Tactics You scored higher than 5% on Guts You scored higher than 79% on Ruthlessness The Which Historic General Are You Test http://www.okcupid.com/tests/take?testid=13827291814577368116 Tuesday, October 25, 2005My shopping list

Haha so...I didn't actually think that last entry posted because I tried to post it late at night and it was giving me all sorts of errors. So I just left it, and I was all "Whatever, I'll draw a nicer one when I actually post it so Purin doesn't laugh at me too hard." But then Blogger decided to try to make nice and just post without telling me...also, it handily resized to, um, save me the trouble? Blogger knows best I guess. o_O My drawing looks worse than usual because I only have a touch pad. I tried to add a mouse, but my optical mouse does crazy inch-long jumping things when I try to move it around, which makes it hard to draw. Maybe I need a better mouse pad or something? Do they have classes where they teach people really basic stuff like what a voided check looks like and how long it takes hamburger meat to go bad and what are all the acceptable ways to close a business email? Because I feel like I needed that class, and maybe less calculus. School is bunk. Tuesday, October 11, 2005Drink, and be cleansed
A conversation with davesque has inspired me to invent an alcoholic drink named the Cosmikvah. (From cosmic + mikvah. Kirk/Spock was also involved tangentially in this conversation, as was the Old Testament LORD. I'm really not going to say anything else about it.) The cosmikvah will bathe you in heavenly alcohols and purify all taint in your soul. It will also be kinda fruity. I'm thinking it needs: champagne raspberry Chambord a sugared glass and possibly something else divine like...mint? ew, maybe not. I'm bad at drinks. Someone make me a recipe worthy of the cosmikvah name. Blimey!
I just got the HP:SS and HP:POA DVDs for a combined price of $15. They're even widescreen/special edition! I <3 you, independently owned video store, and your excess inventory too. Sunday, October 09, 2005Fall Cleaning
Well my apartment is still a mess, but at least I did some serious housecleaning on my novel. Book I of BotI is now complete, fairly polished, split into manageable chapter sizes, and backed up in 4 different places. I feel good about setting it aside for a month to focus on Slender Threads. NaNo here I come! In other news, I need to vacuum my lungs or something. I've been feeling like I'm getting a cold for the past three days, but it never develops into anything. Possibly it's just the tail end of my allergies? I can already feel the cold and the darkness sapping my strength. T_T Friday, October 07, 2005Horoscope can stay
Finally, someone at my local college newspaper has written a horoscope for Capricorns that makes sense: "Get through today with as little interaction with colleagues and peers as possible. You will do your best when allowed to work in a tranquil setting. A chance to meet someone who interests you is likely." So wait...I will find true love through misanthropy? My day just got 5 stars! Seriously, I'm thinking of putting this on a t-shirt. Wednesday, October 05, 2005NaNo Icon!
Purin made me the best participation icon for NaNo 2005 EVAR! Go ogle the beautiful swashbuckling protagonist to the left. Marvel at Purin's deft, subtle touch with line and color, even when I make her draw things like ridiculously large hats with ostrich plumes. Hat...<3 This will be a source of great motivation for me through the dark and tormented coming month. Thank you, Purin! The character is the protagonist of Slender Threads, one Altris Monroy, Lord Protector. She's female, despite the title. Long story...at least 50,000 words long, I hope! Tuesday, October 04, 2005NaNo madness begins!
Yay, NaNo's servers are working, and I am officially signed up! And off to a rousing start, as I've already answered forum questions in the Q&A section about medieval Japan and onmyouji. This is the part where I tell all of you to sign up. Where's my CHUCOM at? My novel this year is going to be Baroque sci-fi underground pharmaculture swashbuckling with massive upheaval of gender roles and, for the first time EVAR, female romantic protagonists! It will be SO TOTALLY AWESOME, and I already have the outlines of a plot for it, which is totally uncharacteristic. The working title of the novel is "Slender Threads." This has to do with the fact that the pseudo-Baroque city state relies on the production of silk for its wealth and unique situation. It also comes from Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo: "From what slender threads do life and fortune hang!" Seeing as how I read The Three Musketeers to get in the mood, it seemed appropriate. But Counterpoise was working-titled Lord of the House, so we'll see how long this lasts. I just can't write unless I have some kind of title to put at the top of the page! I'm all order of operations like that. ^_^;; Monday, October 03, 2005Too English Major for My Own Good
So I really want to get this shirt that says "Prose before Hos" on it, but it also features a bust of Shakespeare, and I am bothered by the fact that, although he is the most recognizable writer ever, he was not exactly known for his prose. Perhaps parts of his plays that were more in the venacular or more 'casual' dialogue would fall under prose, but all his work is so rhythmic! But I really like the shirt, so I might just suck it up and get it anyway. Am I being crazy? Sunday, October 02, 2005Sewing!
I managed to finally finish a sewing project. I made this adorable white skirt for my Halloween angel costume. (I'm going to be Gabriel if I can find a teensy horn.) I followed all the directions and didn't really even fuck anything up, although if I'd thought about it harder, I would have made the waistband look cuter than in the instructions. I even managed to take a few shortcuts that didn't end up ruining the whole thing! Muwaha, at last I have shown sewing who is boss. In other news, I really, really want NaNo to pull its act together so I can sign up. |
