Monday, February 20, 2006Movie Review: "Nothing"
I recently watched the movie "Nothing"...pretty much because it had David Hewlett in it. I love DH as Rodney, but after watching "Nothing" I wonder if he's either typecast or is just one of those actors who always plays himself. Mostly it's his verbal patterns; it seems like he can't not talk like Rodney. Purin has seen more movies with him, so maybe she'd know if he has a broader range. I'm not sure I'd recommend "Nothing" unless you really like French absurdist theatre or "Waiting for Godot" type stuff. The basic premise is that two loser best friends get fucked over by the world and then hate everything away until they are alone with only their house in a sea of nothingness...and then they have to figure out how to live with each other. Pretty soon you see where it has to end up. There were some very funny parts, and an adorable turtle named Stan, but over all, kind of a "Huh?" experience. Do You Smell That? I left work early today because my panic smelled like burnt sugar I thought was poison tipping my brain. Tortillanado Today the wind Wrapped me in the world Like it was making a burrito. But it didn't tuck in the ends So the beans of life and I All fell out. Thursday, February 09, 2006NaNo 2005 Update
I've been dithering around with my NaNo 2005 book, but now I have a hard deadline to have all the unwritten holes filled in and the whole thing edited at least once through for consistency and sense. That deadline is March 15. Madness! I have to meet this deadline, though, because I have to send a printed copy to a friend of mine in far-off lands. Excellent motivation. I was going to get back to BotI, but possibly that will be backburnered again...I'm starting to think maybe I should make an outline for the rest of BotI. In truth, though, motivation for me is a careful balancing act of having no idea what my characters will do in a scene and yet a very clear idea of what each chapter will accomplish. I am sort of lacking the latter for BotI right now. I'm astonished to think that The Protector might end up being my first "pitchable" novel--done, edited, long enough, original, something I wouldn't mind having my real name on, and pretty entertaining. Wouldn't that be a dose of irony! |
